During every vending season one major topic of discussion is that of job title.  Specifically; are ice cream truck drivers vendors or solicitors?  What’s the difference and who cares anyway?

Well the truth is, the The United States Department of Labor cares.  According to the Department of Labor, and the office of Administrative Law Judges, in the Dictionary of Occupational Definitions, job titles and descriptions have been defined in order to “assist.. with the most current and accurate occupational information possible.” (The United State’s Secretary of Labor).

Over the past 30 plus years, The Ice Cream Wagon has had a variety of songs as chimes.  None, however, have survived this special one.  For many years, this chime is the one that The Ice Cream Wagon has chosen exclusively. Primarily, for its uncommon, unknown and melodic sound.  Ironically, customers actually recognize The Ice Cream Wagon trucks by their chime as they canvas the Denver streets and surrounding neighborhoods.

And so here you go- what you have been so eagerly anticipating. Red Wing is the name of the song.  It was written in 1907 with music by Kerry Mills and lyrics by Thurland Chattaway.  Mills adapted the music from Robert Schumann’s composition for piano “The Happy Farmer, Returning From Work” from his 1848 work Album For The Young, Opus 68. The song tells of a young Indian maiden’s loss of her brave who has died in battle. It is most memorable for its chorus which is what is played by The Ice Cream Wagon trucks.

Burt called his creation the Good Humor® bar, capitalizing on the then widely held belief that a person’s “humor,” or temperament was related to the humor of the palate (sense of taste). Convinced that he had something big on his hands, he filed for a patent at 3 a.m. on January 30. The patent officials didn’t share his sense of urgency. It took three years and a personal trip to Washington,  D.C., with a five-gallon pail of Good Humor® bars before Burt was finally granted exclusive rights to “ice cream on a stick.”To market his new product, Burt sent out a fleet of 12 chauffeur-driven trucks, all with bells. The Good Humor® bar was an immediate success in Youngstown. Customers liked that the ice cream was on a stick, and the Good Humor® men in their white uniforms promoted a clean, wholesome, and trustworthy image.

Between 1921 and 1925 the availability of the Good Humor® bar grew. Then, in 1926 after the death of her husband, Cora Burt took the company public with franchises costing just $100. During the next few years as Good Humor® expanded into other parts of the Midwest, the Good Humor® Corporation of America was formed. It acquired the patents and consolidated the operations of some of the franchised companies.

In 1930, a New York businessman and investor by the name of M.J. Meehan acquired the national rights to the company by buying 75 percent of the shares. The Meehan family owned the company until 1961 when it was sold to Unilever’s U.S. subsidiary, the Thomas J. Lipton Company.

Unilever’s Lipton Foods unit continued to manufacture and market Good Humor® products for the next 12 years. In 1976, when the company’s direct-selling business was disbanded in favor of grocery stores and free-standing freezer cabinets, the trucks were parked for the last time. Some of the trucks were purchased by ice cream distributors while others were sold to private individuals.

In 1989, Unilever purchased Gold Bond Ice Cream, located in Green Bay, Wis., and grouped its U.S. ice cream and frozen novelty businesses under the name Gold Bond-Good Humor Ice Cream. With its acquisition of Breyers® Ice Cream in 1993, the company name was changed to Good Humor-Breyers® Ice Cream.

I used to think that the ice cream truck was expensive.  Think about it; a couple of dollars for an ice cream bar that might cost .99 cents at the local grocer seems like a lot.  So the other day I had a realization that put this into perspective.  I went to see Avatar and I was asked to pay an additional three dollars on top of the regular ten dollar price.  The extra three was for the 3D experience.  Once again, I felt gouged by Hollywood.  Once I was inside, I went to the munchies counter only to receive further sticker shock.  And so my brain began to whirl.  I have to admit though, I did enjoy the movie and the experience.

Then I began to think of my local coffee house.  I spend between two and five dollars almost daily to get a cup of regular coffee or some five-minutes-to-prepare froo-froo drink.  Then the local ice cream parlor came to mind.  Last summer I spent from seven to ten dollars for a couple of ice cream cones.  By now my mind was smoking (from use).  I was on fire.  The whole universal picture was finally coalescing into one solid mosaic of truth.  Okay, maybe not the whole picture but at least the ice cream truck pricing picture.

Enter the ice cream man and his jingling truck.  Bob is his name.  Here is a guy that regularly brings to my door a cool and refreshing summer treat.  So again I begin to think.  I love it when I do that.  Bob drives a specialized vehicle to my house that requires insurance (which can’t be cheap) and gasoline (which isn’t cheap).  On top of that, Bob has to regularly maintain this vehicle and at the same time, make a living delivering frozen treats.  And to top it all off, I have noticed that he has not raised his prices in more than three years.  How can this be I asked myself?  So I concluded that Bob has obviously decided not to pass on his cost of living.  What a nice guy!

Then the full realization came to me.  No one else delivers to me the full experience I get from the ice cream truck.  It reminds me of my childhood days having fun in the sun.  No one else does that for me for a couple of bucks.  And then I thought to myself; one day my neighborhood kids will feel as I feel when the ice cream truck comes by:  Reminiscent of the care free, childhood days of summer eating an ice cream and playing.  So next time I get the urge to say “I remember when it used to cost a nickel,” I think of the work my mind did on this fine day and put things back into perspective.  I have got to scramble now, I hear the jingle of Bob’s ice cream truck just outside my door.
